Transformation { Tuesday }

Sometimes all you need is a fresh coat of white paint, gold hardware, decorative panels, and you got yourself a super chic IKEA hack! This dramatic furniture facelift was performed on the Bjursta sideboard for a special DIY project at the headquarters of Post Peanut Children's Boutique. We were looking for additional storage that would double as a credenza, but didn't want to break the bank. This IKEA sideboard was the perfect size and price. After gathering a short list of inexpensive supplies and a few days of spraying, this gorgeous office decor was born.

  1. Zinsser Primer: The ultimate sealer to prevent paint from chipping. You will need one or two coats of this stuff. It can either be sprayed or rolled for most even coverage. Make sure you get the shellac-based product, which is ideal for laminate furniture.

  2. Rust-Oleum Spray Paint & Primer: This paint was the exact pearly white we were looking for, but we weren't able to get through a can without the tip clogging on us. Although it worked for this project, after some trial and error, we discovered the better spray paint is Rust-Oleum Painter's Touch 2x, which has a seamless application and the nozzle is very forgiving on the index finger.

  3. Gigi Overlay: At My O'verlay you can find decorative panels in all sorts of patterns and sizes for all kinds of projects. Their products are compatible with most IKEA units, except the Bjursta. So, we found the closest measurements to our cabinet doors and we just cut out the extra material. Glued the overlay using liquid nail, let it dry overnight and sprayed two coats to finish.

  4. Hardware: A sleek half moon silhouette adds a sophisticated touch to any piece. We found ours at a local hardware store, but any cabinet pulls or knobs will make for an inexpensive upgrade.

*Warning: DIY projects may become addicting. Hmmm..what to do next?
